Real exam pattern, negative marking and a worked solution for every question.
In object-oriented programming, programs continuously allocate objects on the heap. If these objects and their allocated memory are not handled properly, memory leaks accumulate, consuming system RAM and eventually crashing the entire application.
1. What is Garbage Collection (GC)?#
Garbage Collection refers to the automated background mechanism of managing and reclaiming dynamic heap memory.
Through Garbage Collection, memory allocated to objects that are no longer referenced or reachable by any active thread is automatically detected and freed up. This eliminates manual memory deallocation errors common in C (like dangling pointers, double frees, and memory leaks).
2. The finalize() Method: Purpose and Modern Nuances#
Tricky Question 18: "What is the purpose of the finalize() method?"
The `finalize()` method was originally provided in `java.lang.Object` as a hook called by the Garbage Collector immediately before an object is reclaimed from heap memory. It was designed to perform cleanup operations (such as closing open file descriptors or releasing native handles).
finalize() is officially deprecated in Java 9+ and scheduled for removal! Why? Because the garbage collector runs on its own non-deterministic schedule. System resources might stay locked indefinitely waiting for GC to sweep. Instead, modern production systems use try-with-resources and AutoCloseable.
